Back in 1997 I was visiting Tokyo, Japan for one month. I lived with a family, the Watanabes, and got an amazing experience of Japanese culture and family life. One thing I learned, was how to fold origami. One of my favorites is the origami balloon. These small balloons make perfect lanterns if attached to a LED light. Here’s how to make an origami balloon LED garland from a newspaper.
Supplies: A newspaper, a LED garland and a paper cutter. If you’ve never folded a balloon before, you might wanna practice two or three times first. Folding instructions can easily be found if you google origami balloon.
- Fold two or three balloons in different sizes and try them on a LED bulb. You attach the balloon to the LED garland using the hole in which you blew up the balloon. No tape is necessary if you get the right size.
- Make balloons for every bulb on the LED garland. If you’re making this from a newspaper that means cutting a square, folding a balloon and blowing it up – again and again until you have your number. My LED garland had 35 LED bulbs so I made 35 balloons.
- Attach the balloons to the LED garland. I made this for a Norwegian newspaper (VG) and made sure that their logo was on every fifth ballon. Here it might be a good idea to think about whether you want an order or pattern before you start.
